These terrifying Kiwano Shrunken Heads are a perfect edible decoration for any Halloween table. Carved like tiny monsters, they ooze with the spooky green goo of the kiwano, making them both creepy and delicious!
Ingredients
Directions
Using a sharp knife, carefully cut off the top of each Kiwano melon. Scoop out the insides, saving the flesh and seeds in a bowl. This will leave you with hollowed-out Kiwano shells that you’ll carve into spooky faces.
To carve the shrunken heads, use a small paring knife or carving tools and carefully carve monster faces into the kiwano shells. You can carve out eyes, a nose, and a creepy mouth—get creative!
Next, spoon the saved kiwano flesh and seeds back into the carved kiwano heads. Let some of it ooze out of the mouth and eyes for a creepy effect. If you want to make the “goo” even more eerie, you can stir in a few drops of edible food coloring (green, red, or black) to enhance the gory look.
To decorate, place berries or edible googly eyes into the carved eye sockets. For extra effect, use rambutan hairs as eyebrows or hair by sticking them into the kiwano’s spiky surface.
To serve, place the shrunken heads on a dark platter, allowing the green pulp to pool around the heads for added effect. Add Halloween-themed decorations like plastic spiders, skulls, and bones to complete the spooky scene.
Recipe Note
For a gory twist, make your shrunken heads “bleed,” by drizzling Melissa’s Raspberry Dessert Sauce for a blood-like effect. For interactive fun, guests can scoop out the oozy kiwano filling with a spoon for a gruesome, yet tasty, treat.
