Looking like miniature apples, Tejocotes are the size of cherry tomatoes with a thin bright yellow skin. The cream-colored fruit has a sweet and sour taste, reminiscent of plum and apricot. Though it can be eaten out of hand, Tejocote is usually peeled, seeded, cooked and then preserved in a heavy syrup laced with cinnamon for use in desserts and baked goods. A favorite holiday fruit of Mexico, Tejocote is the main ingredient in the traditional Mexican Christmas ponche (punch).

Choose fruit that is clean and bright with no blemish or scarring. If kept refrigerated, Tejocotes will store for up to one week.

Display with kumquats, loquats, and other specialty fruits.
