Gai Lan closely resembles another Asian cabbage known as Choy Sum. With very small white flowers rather than yellow near its stems, the entire vegetable, including the flowers can be boiled, steamed and stir-fried.
Similar to a flowering broccoli, Gai Lan has very dark green leaves and slender grayish to mid-green stalks. Sometimes a substitute for kale, Gai Lan has a pleasantly bitter flavor reminiscent of Choy Sum.
Used in soups and vegetable dishes, Gai Lan is best in winter and is an excellent source of vitamin C.
Gai Lan from Melissa’s is hand-selected for excellent quality. Choose heads with full, dark green leaves and fresh stalks. Avoid any brown spots which could indicate decay. Use as soon as possible and refrigerate, unwashed in a plastic bag for no more than 2-3 days.
