Melissa’s Sliced Cactus Leaves, or nopalitos, come from the large Mexican cactus nopal. They have a flavor similar to green beans and okra, with hints of green bell pepper and citrus. Cactus leaves are a staple vegetable in Mexican cuisine (as well as many other countries), enjoyed from breakfast through dinner, atop eggs, as the base for a salad, in soup and as a simple side.
In their just picked form, cactus leaves have sharp spines that must first be trimmed before consuming. Melissa’s Sliced Cactus Leaves are pre-trimmed, cleaned, sliced and ready to use! Simply rinse under cool water before preparing.
Sliced Cactus Leaves can be served raw or cooked. For a simple salad or side, combine Sliced Cactus Leaves with chopped cilantro, tomatoes, avocado, red onion, chili pepper, lime juice and olive oil.
To cook Sliced Cactus Leaves, place strips in a medium-sized boiling water pot. Add half a sliced onion, 1 clove of garlic and ½ teaspoon salt. Boil uncovered for 8 to 10 minutes, or until tender. Note: the cactus will exude a sticky, foamy substance. Once cooked, drain and rinse the cactus and pat dry with a paper towel. Add to scrambled eggs, stews and sautés.
Cactus leaves are also delicious grilled and served with cheese, blended into smoothies or pureed into soup.
