These apples are a tasty heirloom variety that was first grown in Arkansas by an early settler in the 1840’s. They originated from a Winesap seedling. The apple is prized for having a pleasantly tart flavor, crisp texture and long-term storage characteristics. In fact, they are harvested when dark red, the fruit’s skin turns almost black when stored for any length of time.
Choose apples that are firm and hollow sounding when tossed a few inches in the air and caught in palm of hand. Avoid dense or dull looking fruit, which is a sign of age. Kept refrigerated, apples will store for at least two weeks.
