Fetel Pears, also known as Abate Fetel Pears, are the most popular pear in Italy, desired for a rich, honeyed flavor and silky consistency. When ripe, this distinctive heirloom pear is known for a balanced sweetness that isn’t overwhelming saccharine. Pear connoisseurs call it one of the best in the world.
Originally from France, Fetel pears are named after the abbot Fetel who, in 1865, bred the pear from several local cultivars. Eventually, the pear came to Italy, where it continues to be cultivated in Emilia-Romagna, a region recognized for high growing standards. Today, this pear is grown in Italy, South America and California for a very short growing season.
This pear is identified by its slender, almost banana-shaped appearance and yellowish-green skin with brown russeting. Enjoy Fetels when just barely ripe, when the stem area gives to a little squeeze. Enjoy out-of-hand or served with a wedge of Parmesan or Pecorino. Equally delicious pairings include pizza with gorgonzola, sandwiches with arugula or tarts with almond cream.
Fetel Pears ripen quickly at room temperature, although they can be stored in the refrigerator for several weeks.
This item is perishable and must ship at least 2nd day.
