A new variety from Washington being introduced into the marketplace by Washington State University after some 15 years of cross-breeding. The university has been trying to develop an apple with good taste, firm texture and extended storage capabilities; the Crimson Delight is the first release from those efforts.

Medium/large in size, the Crimson Delight has an extremely firm texture that is extra-juicy crisp.
It will take several years of increased commercial planting before the Crimson Delight will enjoy wide distribution.
However, because of the variety’s long-term storage characteristics, this new variety does have the potential to provide season-long supplies as popularity spurs production.
Choose apples that are firm and hollow sounding when tossed a few inches in the air and caught with the palm of the hand. Avoid dense or dull-looking fruit, which is a sign of age. Kept refrigerated, apples will store for 2-3 weeks.
