Melissa’s Clementines are the smallest member of the mandarin family of citrus fruits. Its name applies to citrus fruit that is easy to peel. Not to be confused with a tangerine, the Clementine is usually seedless.
Also known as the Algerian tangerine, Clementines are the crown jewel of the Mandarin Citrus Family. Originating in North Africa, this is the best loved mandarin orange.
A hybrid between an orange and mandarin or tangerine, this variety is seedless, smaller in size, has thinner membranes, and more plentiful juice with a refreshingly sweet tang. The color is a bright red-orange with a pebbled, loose skin.
Since the peel is easily pulled from the flesh, some refer to it as a kid-glove orange. You can eat the fruit without soiling your hands: separate into segments and enjoy it as a refreshing dessert.
Choose Clementines that are firm and heavy for their size. Avoid blemishes and shriveled or moldy spots. For the juiciest, sweetest fruit, look for Clementines with a sweet, clean fragrance. Store at cool room temperatures for up to one week or refrigerate for up to two weeks.
Peel Clementines before use. Three medium-sized Clementines equal approximately one pound.
