For Chefs & Produce Managers Food Service: 323-584-4940 Produce Managers: 800-468-7111
Seasonality: Year Round
Origin: USA, Mexico
Not to be confused with Bihindi (also known as okra in India), although it bears a striking resemblance, Chinese Okra is a popular vegetable used extensively throughout China.
A long, thin squash with a dull-green skin, Chinese Okra has deep, narrow ridges which give it a star-shaped slice when cut. So named because of its similarity in taste and texture to okra, Chinese Okra is usually eaten young, before it becomes bitter.
Steamed, sautéed or braised, the flesh becomes soft and tender and can be stir-fried or deep-fried.
Chinese Okra from Melissa’s is hand-selected for excellent quality. Choose firm, young squash (no more than 18 inches in length) with unblemished skin. Store in the refrigerator for up to 10 days.
