Chinese Leeks can be easily distinguished from common leeks by their size and flavor. Grown for use primarily as an onion, Chinese Leeks are smaller and more slender.
Resembling green onions, Chinese Leeks have thicker leaves and a milder flavor (with occasional bitterness). A relative of asparagus and onions, these vegetables actually sweeten when cooked and are often stir-fried with meats.
Usually only the white part of the vegetable is used, although the dark green outer leaves may be used as a garnish.
Chinese Leeks from Melissa’s are hand-selected for excellent quality. Choose firm stalks and avoid any yellow or brown spots. They should be fresh-looking and flexible. Store in the refrigerator, wrapped in paper towels for up to 5 days.
Cut off the green tops and roots. Slice in half and rinse well.
