Every year for the past 20 years, I have been creating a produce display on the main stage of Merrill Hall at the Ecological Farming Conference in Pacific Grove, CA, using organic produce from the growers and distributors who attend.

While merchandising in the produce department one Friday, I watched a customer pick out an organic pineapple. He would flick it with his index finger to check for ripeness as he picked up each one.

This amazing fruit has been around for centuries. The name is believed to have come from several places. One idea is that the name represents the plant’s runners, which were said to have been “strawed” or strewn over the ground in ancient times.
